Monday, May 26th 2008 -- The FCC today announced plans to begin another auction, this time in an attempt to sell off a portion of the 25mhz frequency, specifically the frequency in the 2155-2180 range.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said the new auction named AWS III would required the winning bidder to give free broadband services to 50% of the United States by 2012, followed by 95% free usage for the rest of the population by the end of the license terms.

A date for the auction has yet to be set, with an FCC vote on the date set for June 12th.

No word has been given yet as to whether the auction will affect the currently sold 700mhz spectrum, and the FCC plans on going to the public sector to determine that issue.
