Sprint, Nextel, U.S. Cellular and Alltell wireless are facing fines totaling approximently $2.8 Million dollars after network failures and a lack of E911 support has left dispatchers unable to track critical 911 geographics placed from cellular devices
The FCC announced that a lack of coverage support for the required E911 service has left dispatcher at a lost when attempting to determine the location of a cellular 911 call. The enhanced network according to the FCC is suppose to allow dispatchers to determine the geographic location of a cellular call when it is placed on the 911 service.
The FCC deadline for E911 support in December of 2005 was not met by the fined organizations, with Sprint Nextel leading the lack of support, leaving approx. 15 million users without E911 support. The FTC has stated on many occassions that consumer protection is their main concern.
