April 3rd, 2008 -- News has surfaced that Google Inc. had bid in the recent FCC auctions with the sole purpose of driving up bid pricing, ensuring that bids would reach the price necessary to trigger open access spectrum use.

Google announced that not only did they intenionally bid to increase prices, and to trigger open access use, but that they also had no intention of beating out Verizon Wireless for the spectrum space. Verizon eventually won the spectrum in final bidding, although Google did state that they would have used the spectrum if they had somehow won bidding on the C Block of the 700mhz spectrum, the only spectrum currently available with open access rules in place.
