The iPhone is receiving an upgrade via a firmware download. The new features will include GPS mapping, new SMS features, and the ability to create new homescreens.

Apple has announced that the GPS application which uses the Google Maps application will now allow users to find their physical location, while also switching between the hybrid satellite and map views. The GPS application will work much like other Assisted GPS (AGPS) applications, using cell towers to triangulate a users position.

Aside from GPS functionality, the new iPhone firmware upgrade will also allow for SMS messages to be sent to multiple receipients at one time.

The upgrade will also feature the ability to create multiple homescreens, and to arrange those screens as the user sees fit.
