The folks at the the Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum has released what they hope will become the standard protocols for Linux based operating devices, a move that comes only a month after Google released their own Linux based mobile operating system named Android.

The rollout standard from LiPS will create a standard set of API's the program backbone of the mobile operating system. In theory, a standard API set will allow programs to program faster, and more efficiently, while also allow for better integration between programs.

The set of standards is not currently implemented, but rather a set of guidelines laid down on paper, the organization has admitted that moving to real world use will be a challenge, but one that could ultimately lead to more operable cellular devices, at lower costs to customers.

The company has stated that they will work through 2008 to create a set of API's to be implemented.

LiPS Specification 1.0

The first LiPS Forum Specification defines standardized APIs for:

  • Calendar
  • Messaging
  • Presence
  • Reference model
  • Telephony services
  • UI Services
