Monday, April 28th 2008 -- Mobile Phones will soon have the ability to use Skype functions if all goes well with the companies new software applications which is currently undergoing beta tests.
The application will only work on java enabled cellular devices and will allow users of the application to access Skype functions, which currently include partaking in such things as chat, group chat, Skype presence, and Skype-to-Skype calling.
My favorite part of the new application is the softwares integration with the voice radio on phones to end and receive calls, its definately a move that should help cut down on the number of minutes per call. The unit will use the voice radio to connect and then switch over to the units data connection when on the call.
Skype currently asks that a 400mhz processor be used if you are using their non-mobile version on mobile devices with WiFi, i'm curious to see if the 400mhz processor speed will remain on this new version.
U.S. customers will also have to wait on the offering, currently its only featured in Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Users in the above mentioned regions can download the software over the air or onto their PC and then transfer it to their mobile device. A data plan is also recommended, otherwise large data charges will apply to your calls.
