Sprint and Clearwire announced today that they will abandon their Wimax partnership, a plan that would have created an national Wimax network, in a move that could have pushed 4G technologies to the forefront of wireless data connectivity.

The WSJ reported that the plan fell apart after the companies couldn't agree on the terms of their partnership, and was further hindered by the loss of Sprint CEO Gary Forsee. Both companies did however announce plans to release their own smaller network of WiMax connections, those WiMax networks however will not be a national deployment, but rather available in Metro areas.

Sprint has been under fire by investors who believe the company does not need to spend their projected $5 billion dollars on the plan, especially during a time when customer service issues and a loss of subscribers has hurt the companies bottom line. Sprint however has continued to back their WiMax plan, even after announcing the split. More than likely the company is optimistic due to Intel Corps, and Google Inc. backing of the plan. Google has offered internet services via Sprint's WiMax plan. Sprint told news.com that it "remains fully committed to developing WiMax services and deploying a WiMax network, and will continue to work with Clearwire on opportunities such as network roaming agreements and airwaves exchanges."
