Sprint Wireless has begun to move away from their vast array of network platforms, instead beginning the development of a single network that can support all Sprint Wireless and Nextel technologies through a single network backbone.

The new network will focus on a common optical backbone, an extended IP Netwrok, a new cell-site infrastructure, and IMS Technology that will integrate their CDMA, iDen, and WiMax netoworks into one cohesive unit.

Sprint Wireless has also announced that the network APIs will be open to third party application and software developers, a move that will allow cellular programs to better tailor their own applications for Sprint customers, while working within a controlled environment to yield the best software application results.

A timeframe for the platform has yet to be announced by Sprint.
