Thursday, June 19th 2008 -- Sprint CEO Dan Hesse Announced today that Baltimore will be the first Sprint Wireless WiMax area to release a full commerical WiMax network for public use, a move that signals the beginning of a nationwide rollout of the long anticipate and often delayed hi-speed data network.
According to Hesse the Baltimore rollout will begin in September, and after the program is deemed successful Sprint Wireless will then move on to Chicago and Washington D.C. which have both acted as beta tests for the WiMax network. The Chicago and Washington D.C. full commercial WiMax networks are expected to be fully operational by the end of 2008 with further cities following in 2009.
Sprint Wireless and Clearwire officially formed their partnership and new company in May 2008 and are working together to roll out a nationwide network that will be run by both companies.
