Wednesday, July 23rd 2008 -- The folks at UBS Investment Research have let surface their belief that Telus and Bell Mobility, the second and third largest Canadian wireless carriers may be jumping ship from CDMA to GSM technologies in a bid to compete with #1 Canada carrier Rogers Wireless.

According to UBS the company is looking to adopt HSDPA technologies and leave the CDMA market which accounts for only about 20% of cellular networks worldwide. It is still unknown whether the companies will adopt HSDPA or jump to the much touted Long Term Evolution (LTE) data networks which offer faster speeds with more stability in early testing.

What is known is that if the transition occurs it will cost Telus and Bell upwards of $360-480 million dollars to transition.

The big winner in this situation? Aside from customers it will more than likely be Nokia Seimens or Huawei whom experts believe will be commissioned with the job of building the new GSM carrier network for both companies.
