Verizon has announced that they will in fact suppor the new Open source Google Mobile Operating System known as Google. The move comes after a short hold out by the wireless carrier that last less than a month since the release of Androids Software Developer Kit.

Businessweek reports that part of the support comes from the devices ability to support a wide range of devices, many which will be cheaper to aquire, thus opening up network access to lower income users.
The move didn't come as much of a suprise considering Verizon has continued to struggle with mounting technical support issues. At one point Verizon was running 27 call centers, cut back to 17, and then rebounded to 25. With open access handsets will be supported by manufacturers, and not by carriers, allowing companies such as Verizon wireless to offer a larger selection of handsets, combined with a lower cost of support.
The open handset inititiave will also allow Verizon to accept tested phones onto their network that are tested at the cost of the creator, not of the mobility carrier, a move that will save the company millions in testing and development costs that are often associated with creating manufacturer specific phones for sole use on their own networks.
