HTC Touch Pro Review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
The HTC Touch Pro is not only a device that offers a sleek design with a well thought out qwerty keyboard, its actually a very powerful Pocket PC that integrates popular hardware such as GPS, MicroSDHC card capabilities, and an ultra fast processor, with the abilities of Windows MObile 6.1 professional and the newly minted HTC TouchFlo 3D Interface technology.

In this review we'll take a quick look at the device, then examine some of the main offerings on the Touch Pro

Design Factor

The HTC Touch Pro much like the HTC Touch Diamond features a simplistic frontside display that offers only 5 buttons, the first left side buttons feature a home key that accesses the device home screen on the top left, followed by a send key direction below it. Looking to the right side the Touch Pro features a back arrow key and underneath that an end key. Between those four keys is a D-Pad Button selection along with the up/down/left/right arrows which are flush
with the bottom of the device, and which essentially are masked by the device design. All of the buttons are under the devices 2.8 inch VGA screen.

The bottom of the device then features the USB port which can be used for data syncing, listening to music, and for charging purposes, a very handy option that is featured on past and future HTC Windows Mobile based devices. The bottom right side of the device also features the Stylus which comes equipped with a magnetic for easy holding.

The left side of the device then features the volume up and volume down rocker keys, while the right side is left blank.

The top of the Touch Pro then features the Power/Standby button while the back of the unit features the devices 3.15MP camera, flash option and the units speaker option.

Finally by sliding the side of the device open users will find a very nice and well thoughout layout. Aside from a nice backlight the 5 row qwerty keypad also features function options that can auto launch the users browser and comm manager among other offerings. The slider is very well built with no scratching or gaping.

Overall the build is very solid, the unit offers an excellent keyboard and the screen is top notch.

FEATURES

The first feature I examined was the units GPS offering. The Touch Pro GPS capabilities extend to a built-in GPS offering with Sirf III processor capabilities along with Assisted GPS. I personally used Google Maps and TomTom Navigator 6 software on the unit. I found both grabbed GPS locations within 15 seconds and while driving the GPS appeared to closely follow my location status. The GPS offering is definitely very capable.

The HTC Touch Pro also features TouchFlo 3D technology, if you have yet to experience this interface it essentially allows you to swipe your finger up and down the device as well as side to side, and by doing so users can access different areas of interest. With TouchFlo 3D the bottom part of the screen also allows users to swipe their finger in order to access different included apps.

As with many of my reviews one of the best features is the newer Windows Mobile 6.1 Mobile operating system, with 6.1 users can use threaded email messages, access Exchange Server 2007 if their company is using the new technology, and find better overall applications thanks to an improved API database and better overall mobile operating system parameters.

CONNECTIVITY

The HTC Touch Pro is a Quad-Band GSM Device which means here in the U.S you can use the unit mainly on AT&T and T-Mobile, unfortunately the Pocket PC's 3G connection is only available on the Europe/Asia HSDPA frequencies of 900/2100 MHz. For those of us in North America this means less than stellar Edge / GPRS connectivity. Upon testing the data speeds I found them to be adequate for light browsing on the Opera Mini browser, but I preferred to use the units WiFi 802.11 b/g WiFi connection which was much faster and which I was able to connect to using secured WEP and non-secured networks. For Bluetooth
users Bluetooth 2.0 is available meaning users can connect up to 6 devices on different COM Ports at one time, with Enhanced Data Rates (EDR) the Bluetooth option is also very capable of transferring data over your computer to device, or from device to device. Finally the unit offers an EXT USB port which is great for data syncing on your computer, for charging the device, and for listening to music and for TV out functions.

The unit also features a 528 Mhz processor with 512MB ROM and 288MB RAM which means your connections will always have the support of your devices memory and processor speed.

DISPLAY

The display on the HTC Touch Pro is stellar, offering a VGA screen is one of the first upgrades on the unit, the 2.8 inch screen also means users have access to a large enough display for standard videos, for viewing their pictures on the go, and for use with a large button dialer for easy dialing. The screen is also a Touch Screen TFT display that is very responsive to touches and works great with TouchFlo 3D.

AUDIO

For Audiophiles the HTC Touch Pro offers some great connectivity including support for MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, WAV, and AMR-NB files. Users will also find that TouchFlo 3D helps make it easier to scroll through the included media player which allows users to find songs based on the Artist, Album, Genre, and user set custom playlists.

The audio offering on the HTC Touch Pro also comes equipped with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP meaning you can easily stream your music stereo equipped bluetooth headset. I tested the devices capabilities in my Motorola S9 headet and I found that it was competent, offered easy to hear music, and used less battery life than I expected.

Overall the Audio is on par with other HTC devices, while its not perfect its not bad at all.

CAMERA

The HTC Touch Pro offers a 3.15MP camera, the pictures were fairly crisp on the unit if images were fairly close to the lens. I found very little under and overtones, and I liked that the video playback was fairly steady. I haven't played too much with the camera, but as I do i'll update this section with more info.

CONCLUSION

Overall the HTC Touch Pro is a great addition to the HTC Touch Series. The processor is fast, there is plenty of memory, the screen is improved thanks to VGA capabilities, and the very competent Windows Mobile 6.1 continues to deliver excellent results. The Touch Pro is another example that sometimes top notch form actually works to complement top notch components.

Whether your a multimedia lover or a business professional, I would highly recommend the HTC Touch Pro to anyone looking to expand their mobile capabilities.
